The Fete de la Musique began in 1976 by American musician Joel Cohen, then employed by the national French radio station France Musique.
He proposed an all-night music celebration at the moment of the summer solstice (the longest day of summer). The idea was recognized by the French Minister of Culture/Jack Lang in 1981 and the first Fete took place in 1982.
The Fete de la Musique began in France and has since spread to 110 countries and 250 cities around the world… and now to Laguna Beach. It gives an opportunity to communicate and share a very special moment through music. Basically anyone, any age that can play music is invited to do so, for free, any place they wish, and every style of music is welcome. The MUSIC dayallows the expression for Grandpa to sit on the porch and play his accordion, a returned solider to play his harmonica in the park, and a young school girl might practice her ‘sweet youthful’ voice in a courtyard with echoes…
It is heartwarming to know that you do not have to be in France on this day of music… you may stroll the village streets of Laguna Beach on the day of the Fete de la Musique and voices of song & music echo all over the world – what a lovely way to participate in global understanding and friendship.
